Commitment

Commitment to Students and Student Learning

Gonzalez, J (2014).
1. Define the OCT Concept chosen and the relationship to the artifact

For this Standard of Professional Practice, I believe it is extremely important to identify importance of commitment to students and their learning, however, it is also important to teachers to Know My Child from the perspective of a parent, which is my curated resource I selected for this section. As defined by the OCT Standards of Professional Practice, the Commitment to Students and Student Learning: "Members are dedicated in their care and commitment to students. They treat students equitably and with respect and are sensitive to factors that influence individual student learning. Members facilitate the development of students as contributing citizens of Canadian society" (OCT, 2015).

2. Outline why the resource informs your understanding of the OCT Standards of Professional Practice

In relation to my chosen artifact, I believe it exemplifies the importance of teaching every student equitably, and alongside this concept is the importance of really getting to know each and every one of your students, which is what my curated resource emphasizes. Additionally, the academic resource I accessed to highlight the importance of getting to know your students on a one-on-one basis, Connecting Parents with Learning Projects by Townsend, 2010 highlights the importance to involve families with their child's education in order to "...promote better student attendance, higher graduation rates from high school, fewer retentions in the same grade, increased levels of parent and student satisfaction with school, reduced number of negative behaviour reports, and higher achievement scores on reading and math tests"(Townsend, 2010: 45). Therefore, the more involved that the parent(s) are with the child and their education, and the more invested the educator is in knowing their student on a one-on-one basis, the higher the chance for student success is.

3. Identify the level(s) of reflection you engage/will engage in to use this in the classroom

The levels of reflection that I will need to engage in to utilize this within my own classroom include pedagogical and self-reflexive goals. Firstly, pedagogical goals will need to focus on my educational goals as an emerging educator, and I am a firm believer that there needs to be working equity in the classroom in order for students to succeed. This means that I will need to do whatever I can to ensure that I set up all of my students for success, and as such, I will need to know my students personally in order to meet their needs equitably. In addition, I will need to reflect upon my own belief system in order to find strategies on how to get to know my students and get their parents on board with their education. From my own personal experience, my parents never worked with my teachers to ensure my success, however, for some students I believe that this will need to occur in order to ensure that behavioural expectations are the same at home as they are in my classroom.
