Ongoing Professional Knowledge

Secondary Sara (2015). TED Talks.
1. Define the OCT Concept chosen and the relationship to the artifact

The curated resource that I selected for this section of ongoing professional knowledge is an article about How TED Talks are Transforming the Classroom, posted on Secondary Sara's blog. I believe that this curated resource relates to the Professional Knowledge as defined in the OCT: "Members strive to be current in their professional knowledge and recognize its relationship to practice. They understand and reflect on student development, learning theory, pedagogy, curriculum, ethics, educational research and related policies and legislation to inform professional judgement in practice" (OCT, 2015).

2. Outline why the resource informs your understanding of the OCT Standards of Professional Practice

As an emerging educator, I believe that constant transformation and ongoing knowledge of education is important to keep your students engaged and the information being taught always current and relevant. As such, the academic resource that I have selected to parallel this article is Developing the Sociological Imagination Through Videos by Wagenfeld-Heintz, 2001, which discusses how valuable videos are as effective teaching tools; they help to reinforce concepts, such as sociological concepts to help foster sociological imagination (Wagenfeld-Heintz, 2001). The article also argues that videos help to teach specific topics such as race, gender and ethnicity, highlight personal troubles and public issues, and they urge students to develop critical understandings of self and society (Wagenfeld-Heintz, 2001).

3. Identify the level(s) of reflection you engage/will engage in to use this in the classroom

For this particular resource, I believe I will need to engage with self-reflexivity, and while pedagogy does play a key role in this topic, I need to recognize that my own belief systems greatly influence my opinion on continuing to develop professional knowledge, especially in the regards of technology used in the classroom and venues such as TED Talks. I am biased with TED Talks because I truly believe they can be great educational resources as they allow students to access information they would otherwise be unable to access. However I have to be aware of how my biases with these Talks influences my professional teaching practice, as being aware of unconscious and conscious biases is extremely important, especially on the foundations of equity and respect in the classroom. For example, if I am showing a Talks about a controversial issue, there will need to be a pre-teach involved in order to discuss dignity and respect for everyone. However, I am holding firm in my belief that these Talks are amazing teaching opportunities for students, especially at the Junior/Intermediate/Senior levels depending on the complexity of the Talk. Therefore, I know I will continue to reflect upon these Talks and their importance in my practice.
