1. Define the OCT Concept chosen and the relationship to the artifact

The artifact that I have chosen to demonstrate the ethical standard of trust is the article Building a Positive, Trusting Classroom Environment, written by a middle school math teacher and coach J. Vilson. This article demonstrates trust as, Trust: "The ethical standard of Trust embodies fairness, openness and honesty. Members' professional relationships with students, colleagues, parents, guardians and the public are based on trust" (OCT, 2015).

2. Outline why the resource informs your understanding of the OCT Standards of Professional Practice

This resource is an exemplar of building trust in the classroom as Vilson discusses three fundamental principles: rarely use the word "Wrong", take arguments outside, and on-the-spot affirmation (Vilson, 2012). The academic resource I have selected to parallel this article, Establishing Trust in the Informal Classroom by Zeitz 1974 discusses the same concepts as Vilson, as Zeitz discusses the importance of building trust in the classroom. The first step in establishing mutual trust in the classroom is allowing them to make decisions after being explicitly clear on what the expectations are; you do expect the student to manage their own choices unless they prove otherwise, in which case you help them through the process of scheduling until they can choose (Zeitz, 1974). Fundamentally, "The attitude of the teacher and [their] expectations, demonstrated daily through interaction with [their] children, is basic to the climate of the classroom" (Zeitz, 1974: 453); the teacher has to show their students they care about them as an individual and their growth towards responsibility and independence. Therefore, the process of building trust in the classroom can take many forms and can be applied in many ways, but it is essential to have in the safe, productive classroom.

3. Identify the level(s) of reflection you engage/will engage in to use this in the classroom

The level of reflection that I will have to engage in to utilize this in the classroom will consist of critical reflection and self-reflexive. Critical reflection will have to occur as there needs to be open discussion reflecting on the moral and ethical implications of teaching this in the classroom, and the consequences of classroom practices on students. For example, if there is classroom discussion occurring, then the students need to trust the teacher to single them out amongst their peers in a negative way if they are extremely shy students. Additionally, self-reflexive reflection will have to occur as I will need to analyze my own personal biases. For example, for myself it takes a while to build a trusting relationship with my educators (due to past experiences), however, I will need to keep in mind my own experiences in order to create as trusting as an environment in the classroom for my students and for how they interact with one another.
