Respect

Ethical Standard of Respect

Emily (2015).
1. Define the OCT Concept chosen and the relationship to the artifact

The artifact that I selected to reflect the ethical standard of respect is Five Ways to Strengthen Your Classroom Discipline outlines different strategies to discipline your classroom in order to show respect amongst the peers, their teachers and administration. As defined by the OCT, Respect is: "Intrinsic to the ethical standard of Respect are trust and fair-mindedness. Members honour human dignify, emotional wellness and cognitive development. In their professional practice, they model respect for spiritual and cultural values, social justice, confidentiality, freedom, democracy and the environment" (OCT, 2015).

2. Outline why the resource informs your understanding of the OCT Standards of Professional Practice

This resource very clearly outlines my understanding of the OCT Standards because it very clearly discusses the importance of strengthening classroom discipline in order to foster a safe, respectful classroom environment. The academic source that I have to parallel this curated resource, Teaching Respect in the Classroom: An Instructional Approach by Langland et al, 1998, discusses the importance of "...developing, implementing and sustaining school practices designed to improve school discipline and safety" (Langland et al, 1998: 245). Additionally, this resource outlines effective lesson plans in order to implement respect in the classroom towards staff and towards peers. As such, both of these resources discuss how fundamental establishing a respectful classroom is in order for there to be a safe learning environment.

3. Identify the level(s) of reflection you engage/will engage in to use this in the classroom

The level of engagement that I will need to reflect upon will mostly be critical reflection, as I will need to deconstruct what it means to embody and demonstrate respect in the classroom. Additionally, I will need to discuss classroom management strategies in terms of respect in the classroom. For example, I will demonstrate to my students respect by coming to class on time and prepared, and mutual respect will occur if they too are coming to class on time and prepared. This goes hand in hand with discipline in the classroom as discipline requires mutual respect, and vice versa.
